It was because my dream trip to Iran that I note that there is a direct flight from HK to Almaty (and from where to be transferred to Tehran) - Air Astana.
Upon my revisit to the website of Air Astana, it was disappointed to learn that the route to Tehran was no longer operated (in late January). It came to my attention that there was a promotion of Almaty Marathon to be held on 21 April 2019 together with discount for flight + hotel accommodation (at affordable price). Noel and I then decided to go to this front gate to the Central Asian countries (visa-free for staying Kazakhstan for 14 days).
After confirming the flights, there was lots of reading to plan for what to do in these 7 days. Happy to learn that there are many nature scenes near Almaty (just stay around the south-eastern corner of the country, next to Xinjiang.

The cost of spending in Almaty is also very attractive. It was read in guide book that the exchange rate was US$1 = 321 Kazakh tenge (as of March 2018). The exchange rate is US$1 = 379.7 tenge, about 15% cheaper.
