My way to Salvador
I landed at Salvador airport at around 12:30 pm. Just out of the airport, I went to a stall to buy something for lunch, fritters and orange juice. Then I joined the long line to wait for public bus. Well, it took 4 hours for this ride, so awful as it was hot and packed. Luckily, I could get a seat after an hour standing. After getting off at the terminal, I took a wrong way to the hostel, on the way it was quiet and some bad guys molested me. I did walk very fast to get rid of them and reached the hostel wetted.

Salvador
Brazil's former capital is renowned for its African-influenced cuisine, music and architecture. Known as "the Capital of Joy," because of its exuberant week-long Carnaval celebrations, Salvador brims with contemporary music and art amid architecture that has gone untouched since the 17th century.
Salvador is my favorite city, especially the old city - Largo do Pelourinho. However, it was unsafe to wander a little bit far away.

Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos - It's learnt from the guidebook that there was evening mass but I found that it was closed.

This area was decorated for the Carnival, to be commenced on the following day.

Just outside my hostel, I heard loud noise and found that there were rehersals along the streets. The spirit had already been lifted.

Performed by the first community drumming groups (bloco afros), Olodum, who was formed in early 1980s. Olodum stirred up Carnival with their massive parades of drummers beating out Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Olodum caught the ear of Paul Simon and provided the rhythmic framework for his "The Rhythm of the Saints" album. Olodum also performed with Michael Jackson in his controversial Spike Lee-directed video for "They Don't Care About Us".

My first Brazilian meal - they eat rice and bean. Brazilian Fish Stew - Moqueca de Peixe
This excellent version of fish stew is typical in Bahia, and is prepared with coconut milk and palm oil. Serve it with rice, farofa de dendê, and fried plantains. Palm oil (dende oil) adds a special authentic flavor to this dish

Though it was very expensive, I preferred to stay in Laranjeiras Hostel in the old city.
Reception desk, there were many friendly staff. Lockers in the common area and large terrance.
Common area Especially, there was restaurant next to the hostel, at where I had the breakfast served.
