March & Martinitsas
At the start of March it is time to present friends and relatives with martinitsas - entwined red and white wollen threads - to bring them happiness and health. They are worn on clothing or tied around the wrist until, so the tradition goes, the first stork is seen. Sofia is not exactly overcrowded with storks, but by the end of the month people follow the custom of tying their martinitsas on to a fruit tree in a park or garden.
